Calls for UN to keep Entebbe base

Ugandan MP Theodore Ssekikubo has urged Parliament to support government’s effort to save a UN base in Entebbe that is due to be relocated to Nairobi. New Vision reports that Ssekikubo notes that the base employs 420 Ugandans who earn $11m a year. ‘We will be losing leverage because Entebbe is the only regional and continental base of the UN,’ he said. Speaker Rebecca Kadaga said the matter should be ‘critically debated’. ‘Kenya has many UN bodies and yet Uganda has paid with more blood than our Kenyan counterparts. We have shed blood on the African continent so we deserve to be supported,’ Kadaga said.
