Bitter dispute over late tycoon’s estate

A Kenyan woman who has launched an application to secure a share of the late tycoon Eliakim Olweny's estate, insists they were married. Norah Atieno claims she was Olweny’s second wife and has produced three witnesses to who say their marriage was conducted in accordance with customary laws. The Daily Nation reports that she told Nakuru High Court Judge Teresia Matheka that Olweny paid a dowry of 12 cows and Sh160 000 (about $1 470) to her parents. Olweny, a land surveyor who died in 2016, was the owner of Evans Sunrise hospitals and owned various properties around the country. His vast wealth is the subject of contention between Atieno, Phelesia Akoth and Ann Wanjiru who are fighting for a share of his Sh200m (about $1.8m) estate. The case will be heard on 2 November.
