Bill targets dishonest civil servants

Government officials convicted of stealing public funds risk being blocked from holding public offices should a proposed amendment to Kenya’s Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act (Aceca) become law. The Nation reports that the amendment which was proposed by MP Silas Tiren and is currently before the National Assembly, seeks to make individuals involved in misappropriation of public funds held personally liable. The Aceca Bill 2019, targets managers, CEOs and directors of public institutions. If passed in the current form, it will be a significant boost to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Director of Public Prosecutions in fighting graft within the public service.
