Authorities target Kampala smokers

At least 17 people, including a South Sudan government official, have been detained on charges of smoking tobacco at Kampala’s De Posh and Savanah bars. The Monitor reports that police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed the arrests and said the unidentified government minister was released ‘after establishing his particulars’. Sources say the charges may be dropped in order to avoid a diplomatic spat. The Tobacco Control Act of 2015 prohibits smoking in public establishments. It carries a one-year jail term or $130 fine.
