Apartheid-era killer Louis van Schoor dead at 72

Louis Van Schoor, the notorious South African killer, has died at the age of 72, less than a week after the release of a BBC documentary and podcast that brought renewed attention to his actions. He died in hospital on Thursday due to complications from an infected leg wound, his daughter told the BBC. TimesLIVE reports that Van Schoor was arrested in 1991 and convicted of seven murders and two assassinations but was released on parole in 2003. It is believed he killed at least 39 people, many of them youths and all of them in East London. The documentary revisited Van Schoor’s involvement in a series of violent attacks under the apartheid regime. His death has reignited calls for justice from the victims and their families who have long sought accountability. Van Schoor, often referred to as ‘The Apartheid Killer,’ was a central figure in a violent campaign against anti-apartheid activists.
