UK to sign inter-governmental agreements over e-scams

Britain is close to signing agreements with Japan, the US and South Korea on joint efforts to combat Internet crime, UK’s Energy and E-commerce Minister Mike O’Brien says.

The UK already has a memorandum of understanding with Canada over consumer-related Internet scams. O’Brien is hoping that this model would be extended to other countries. He noted that given the fast pace of technology developments, and the relative slowness of signing international treaties, it was a battle to stay ahead. The Financial Times reports that he hopes that such inter-governmental agreements will help law enforcement bodies to co-operate and deal with issues more quickly. He said that the increased use of the Internet was creating business opportunities for companies globally, However, with these opportunities came a ‘dark side’ including scams, pornography, fraud and spam. Combating these types of problem was an urgent concern for the UK. Full Financial Times report
