Onwards and upwards....

Rwanda has opened Africa's first smartphone manufacturing plant in Kigali. Manufactured by technology company Mara Group – the Mara X and Mara Z smartphones – will use Google’s Android operating system and cost $190 and $130 respectively. BBC News reports that Mara Group CEO Ashish Thakkar said the company is targeting customers willing to pay more for quality. Most phones sold in Africa are from Chinese companies, which offer dual SIM cards and are cheaper than Mara's planned price point. He said smartphones are assembled in Egypt, Ethiopia, Algeria and South Africa, but the companies import the components. He said the $24m plant is capable of producing 1 200 phones per day.
