NPA boss challenged over Zuma meeting

Although Justice Minister Michael Masutha has attempted to defend National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Shaun Abrahams, saying he invited the NPA boss to the controversial meeting at ANC headquarters, nobody is buying it, notes Legalbrief. At least two legal experts have pointed out that Abrahams had no business visiting the ANC’s offices for a meeting, as it created perceptions of bias and political interference (see report below and TODAY's ANALYSIS) and a prosecutor-turned-politician has challenged Abrahams to produce the minutes of his behind-closed-doors meeting with three Cabinet Ministers and President Jacob Zuma. The meeting at Luthuli House took place just a day before he announced his decision to charge Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan with fraud. The chief prosecutor said the meeting was about the anarchy caused by student protests around the country, notes a TimesLIVE report. DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach‚ however‚ challenged Abrahams yesterday to ‘declare publicly the real reasons behind his visit to Luthuli House last week’. Should he have nothing to hide‚ he ‘must make the minutes of the meeting publicly available‚’ she said. Breytenbach described the visit as highly questionable‚ saying it raised ethical questions as the head of the NPA was required to be impartial.
