the environment

To celebrate World Environment Day last week, the Environmental Justice Atlas (EJAtlas) released some of the highlights of its most pertinent findings. The EJAtlas is an inventory of social conflicts around environmental issues, funded by two successive European research projects. The project is directed and coordinated by staff at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. It has collected and categorised about 2 500 ecological distribution conflicts. These focus on who gains and who loses in development processes. Land-grabbing (600 conflicts), renewable energy struggles (357 conflicts) and mega-mining (270 conflicts) are the top three causes of environmental injustice globally, the EJAtlas reveals.
