Publish date: 10 September 2018

Diary: IBA Legalbrief Africa
Category: Zimbabwe

Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti is being investigated by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for allegedly instructing the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) to deposit more than $30m into two banks which have since collapsed. The Herald reports that the commission’s investigations committee head commissioner Goodson Nguni said Biti allegedly deposited the funds at Interfin Merchant Bank and Renaissance Bank on separate occasions. Former directors of NSSA were also under investigation for allegedly siphoning funds to buy houses in South Africa, the Daily News reported. Biti was removed from office with the dissolution of the power-sharing government in 2013, allegedly leaving the government with a domestic debt of almost $5bn.
