Uprising ring leader granted retrial

The Court of Cassation has granted a retrial to one of the leading activists behind Egypt’s 2011 uprising. Ahmed Douma was sentenced to life in prison for taking part in a violent protest months after the uprising. A report on the News24 site notes that the case dates back to December 2011, when clashes broke out between protesters and security forces outside Egypt's Cabinet building. Life sentences were handed down to 230 people in 2015. All but Douma were tried in absentia.
