UN urges action to end Libya's extrajudicial violence

The UN mission in Libya has called on the authorities under the government of the Presidential Council to adopt necessary measures to protect all persons from extrajudicial killings. It said allegations of offences should be judged in the courts and not by gunmen on the streets. ‘Extrajudicial executions are not only acts of extreme cruelty, violating the laws of this country but they also violate international human rights and humanitarian laws,’ it said in a statement. The Libya Observer reports that it added that those responsible for committing or ordering extrajudicial killings are criminally liable under international law. The US embassy in Libya has also strongly condemned the recent violence, saying it is generating instability and adversely impacting the lives of innocent citizens.
