Marriage and Divorce Bill revisited

Ugandan MPs are debating how to re-submit the Marriage and Divorce Bill that has spent more than a decade on the floor of Parliament. Addressing a workshop organised by the Uganda Women Parliamentary Association, some MPs expressed frustration over the impasse. A report on the allAfrica site notes that UWPA treasurer Dorothy Nshaija said the Bill aims to provide protection for both parties in the event of a divorce. She said legislators need to advise the public on the importance of having a law that spells out the procedures in the event of a split. ‘This Bill includes opinions from all sections of the public. The challenge is that its title sounds like it is advocating marriage break ups rather than protecting marriages. We need to educate voters on what the Bill entails,’ Nshaija is quoted in the report as saying.
