Task force to unpack Supreme Court’s death penalty ruling

The Taskforce on the Review of the Mandatory Nature of the Death Penalty, which was appointed by the Attorney-General in March, last week began holding an open forum on the burning issue. This after the Supreme Court in December ruled that the Attorney-General had 12 months to come up with proposals aligned to the recommendations contained in its ruling that the death sentence as provided for under Section 204 of the Penal Code is unconstitutional. CapitalFM reports that the meaning and implication of the ruling will be addressed at the forum in Nairobi. Members of the judiciary, Prisons and Correctional Services, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the National Assembly, Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, Kenya Law Reform Commission are attending. The task force, which is chaired by Maryann Njau-Kimani, will set up a framework to deal with revisiting the cases of convicts on death row as directed by the court.
