A suspected South African jihadist, who is being detained in Mozambique, is in good health, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) has stated. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, Andre Hanekom and two Tanzanians, arrested on 31 December, were named by Mozambican authorities as allegedly being part of a jihadist group operating in the region. A report on the News24 site notes that they face charges of murder and crimes against the state. Hanekom was shot while trying to resist arrest in August. Dirco spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mabaya said Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has received assurance from SA’s High Commissioner to Mozambique, Mandisi Mpahlwa, that ‘Hanekom is well and will appear in court soon’.
