Publish date: 10 December 2018

SA has the highest wage inequality in the world. This is according to the International Labour Organisation Global Wage Report 2018/19 into hourly wages among 64 countries. It also found that SA has a Gini coefficient for wage inequality of .63. The Gini coefficient is a measure used to show income or wealth distribution of a nation’s residents – a coefficient of zero expresses perfect equality.
