Unfair court rulings addressed

A review of complaints reported to Rwanda’s ombudsman relating to unfair court rulings has revealed that 5.9% were legitimate. Delivering the 2017/2018 annual activity report, Anastase Murekezi has told the lawmakers that due to understaffing issues, his office had received support from the Ministry of Justice and the national police to dissect each case and make rulings. ‘Each case is given special attention so that we can come up with a conclusion regarding the next step. What we realised is that there is consistency in wrongful and unfair rulings and it is worrying,’ he said. The New Times reports that Murekezi told lawmakers that his office had received 2 493 complaints seeking intervention. The majority related to land ownership dispute issues and delays in the execution of court orders.
