Role of proposed continental court addressed

The mandate of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (AfCHPR) will not be usurped by the proposed African Court of Justice and Human Rights. That’s according to AfCHPR president Sylvain Sore who argues that the court will remain separate and obligated to its mandate but will serve as a chamber of the new court. The East African reports that he added that the proposed court will have three chambers – human rights, general affairs and international law and criminal law. The Arusha-based court was backed by the AU and its first key decision was in June 2013, when it ruled on Tanzania's election law. The number of cases filed at the court continues to increase and there are 61 cases currently pending.
