Prosecutor calls for ‘extra-long’ imprisonment for rapist

A life sentence would still be too lenient for a man convicted of raping and murdering a pregnant woman at Tses four years ago, a public prosecutor told the Windhoek High Court last week. Advocate Ethel Ndlovu, who addressed Justice Nate Ndauendapo, said Jesajas Boois, who was convicted of rape, murder, defeating or obstructing the course of justice and assault on 27 July, was a repeat offender who had previously also been convicted of similar charges. The Namibian reports that Boois was also convicted of murder, housebreaking and rape in 1997. Ndlovu was addressing a Supreme Court judgment in February which ruled in that ‘extra-long’ jail terms which exceed the expected lifespan of long-term prison inmates are not constitutional. Ndauendapo postponed the sentencing to 18 September.
