President chooses new Chief Justice

President Nana Akufo-Addo has selected Sophia Akuffo as his choice for the position of Chief Justice to replace Justice Georgina Theodora Wood who retires on 8 June. A report on the Peace FM Online notes that the Council of State has already approved the nomination. Akuffo is the second-most senior judge in the country after Justice William Atuguba who is also expected to retire soon. Akuffo has served at the Supreme Court for the past two decades and has a Master’s in Law (LLM) from Harvard University. She has been a member of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute and served as chairperson of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Task Force. In January 2006, she was elected one of the first judges of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights and has served as its president.
