Pardoned prisoners back in jail

Just two weeks after being granted amnesty, 24 inmates – including five women – are back behind bars. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, 4 912 prisoners were released from various prisons countrywide following President Emmerson Mnangagwa's clemency order last month. A report on the allAfrica site notes that Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services spokesperson Elizabeth Banda said it is unclear what offences the released prisoners committed. ‘It could be that society is not welcoming them or they are habitual criminals,’ she said.
