Nubian protesters remanded in custody

A report on the Egypt Independent site notes that the Aswan Court has ordered the continued detention of 24 Nubians for participating in an unauthorised protest until Wednesday when it is set to review the case. This after a group of Nubians last week set out on a march in the Upper Egypt city of Aswan demanding the return of their land on the banks of Lake Nasser, and compensation for families who suffered damaged from the construction of the Aswan Low Dam. Nubians, an ethnic minority that traces its roots back to an ancient civilisation on the Nile, have been forcibly displaced four times in the last century, most recently in 1964 with the construction of the dam.
