Nigerian nationals charged over online scam

Australian police have charged a Nigerian man they accuse of running an e-mail scam from inside an immigration detention centre in Sydney. The 43-year-old unnamed suspect allegedly headed a fraud ring which sent fake messages that claimed to be from trusted companies. BBC News reports that New South Wales police said three other people were charged over the alleged crimes, which included identity theft and romance scams which netted more than $2.2m.

In the UK, Nigerian national Benard Okorhi is fighting his extradition to the US where he is wanted in connection with a complex $15m fraud scandal. The London Free Press reports that US authorities claim he was part of an elaborate online scheme targeting American businesses and lonely hearts. He has been in custody since February and Superior Court Justice Jonathon George must decide whether there’s enough evidence to send him to Memphis to join six others already in custody for a trial slated for next month.
