Nairobi woman wins damages for sex worker slur

A Kenyan woman who was publicly humiliated after staff at a leading Nairobi hotel accused her of being a sex worker 20 years ago has been awarded $30 000 in damages. The Nairobi News reports that Winfred Clarke took the five-star Intercontinental Hotel to court 20 years after staff labelled her ‘a woman of questionable moral conduct’ in front of other guests. Hotel staff had noticed she had arrived without a male partner but she was planning to meet a female friend. She was then escorted from the premises and handed over to the police who kept her in custody for two days. High Court Judge Mbogholi Msagha said the incident caused her ‘great humiliation and embarrassment’.
