Court grants Madonna permission to adopt again

Madonna has been granted permission to adopt two more children from Malawi after the country’s High Court gave its approval. Legalbrief reports that the 'queen of pop' was in the Lilongwe courtroom when the ruling was handed down last week. The Guardian reports that many Malawians have accused the government of giving the singer a special exception to laws that prevent non-residents from adopting children to take abroad. The adoption is conditional on Madonna proving she will provide a suitable home. Dominic Misomale, a government-appointed guardian, will travel with her to the US and observe how she looks after them, before reporting back to the government. The singer (who adopted a Malawian son and daughter in 2008 and 2009) appeared in the High Court on 25 January to seek permission to adopt again. In a 2006 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Madonna – who founded her Raising Malawi Foundation to benefit orphans and underprivileged children – said 'the adoption laws have to be changed to suit the state of emergency'.
