Lusaka under fire over lawyer’s deportation

Zambia’s opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema has criticised the government over last month's deportation of prominent Kenyan lawyer Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, the director of the Kenya School of Laws, was due to give a talk on Africa-China relations on Saturday, but was ordered his return to Nairobi immediately. BBC News reports that Hichilema said the deportation would taint the country's image. The incident is viewed as an attempt by Zambia's authorities to stifle any negative discussion around its friendship with China amidst allegations that the government has accumulated a great deal of debt by borrowing from the Asian economic giant.
