Opposition demands fresh elections

Kenya’s opposition National Super Alliance (Nasa) is demanding a fresh presidential election under a new electoral commission within 90 days. In a motion sent to county assemblies controlled by the Raila Odinga-led coalition, the party reiterated that it rejected Uhuru Kenyatta as President. The Daily Nation reports that Nasa spokesperson Moses Wetang'ula said the motion will be debated and adopted by the regional Houses. Odinga withdrew from the 26 October election re-run protesting over a lack of electoral reforms. Legalbrief reports that the August presidential election was also won by Kenyatta, by a margin of nine percentage points.

A former lawmaker last week filed a petition at Kenya's Supreme Court challenging the results of the election. A report on the Polity site notes that the move opens the door to potential legal challenges to Kenyatta's re-election. Former legislator Harun Mwau's petition seeks to overturn Kenyatta's 26 October victory, a result of a rerun held after the Supreme Court nullified Kenyatta's August win on procedural grounds.
