Officials on the ropes over tainted sugar scandal

Two Kenyan Cabinet Secretaries could be forced out of office after parliamentary committees recommended that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) investigate their role which led to the importation of contaminated sugar last year. However, the Daily Nation reports that the probe will only take place if the National Assembly adopts the report of the joint committees on Agriculture and Livestock, and Trade, Industry and Cooperatives that has recommended that Henry Rotich (Treasury) and Adan Mohamed (East African Community) be held culpable for endangering the lives of Kenyans. If adopted, the two could be forced out to pave the way for investigations. The report also calls for former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett (now the Kenyan High Commissioner to India) to be investigated for aiding 14 companies to import the commodity without paying duty.
