Taxi dispute heads back to court

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has stopped the licensing of 14-seater minibus taxis, derailing operators across Kenya. A report on the allAfrica site notes that just 24 out of 200 vehicles which last month obtained temporary court orders stopping the regulator from denying them licences have had their operating permits renewed. There are more than 37 000 14-seater taxies on the roads. The Association of Matatu Operators says it is not part of the lawsuit and therefore cannot obey the High Court order. However, the NTSA claims the ruling is binding across the sector regardless of whether someone is a party to it or not. The High Court has asked both parties to re-appear in court on 11 January.
