ICC continues to probe post-poll violence

Deputy President William Ruto's State House ambitions may face more hurdles should the ghosts of the 2007/8 post-election violence return to haunt him. The Daily Nation reports that the office of the prosecutor at the ICC has been relentlessly but quietly piecing together fresh information on the carnage which left more than 1 300 people dead and thousands of others displaced. In the latest ICC annual report submitted to the UN General Assembly, it emerged that Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda continues to receive information related to the matter. The case against Ruto and former radio journalist Joshua Sang was dismissed by the court in 2016 due to lack of incriminating evidence but the judges rejected an application of acquittal by the accused. However, the judges stressed that the cases which were weakened by witness interference and a lack of government support could be revived in future.
