Harare seeks $40m to compensate white farmers

Zimbabwe’s Land and Agricultural Ministry is seeking $40m to compensate former white farmers. NewsDay reports that ministry director Peter Mudzamiri said just $20m has been received from government despite the request for $40m which would have enabled it to pay at least 50 former white farmers in the 2019 financial year. Land and Agriculture Minister Perrance Shiri recently confirmed that the authorities wanted to address ‘injustices’ committed during the land reform process. Many farms were allocated to former President Robert Mugabe's allies and fell into ruin, leaving tens of thousands of rural labourers out of work and sending the economy into a tailspin as food production crashed.
