Commission to probe Jammeh

Gambian President Adama Barrow has sworn-in a three-man commission to probe numerous allegations of mismanagement of public funds, abuse of office, and willful violations of public funds by his predecessor Yahya Jammeh and his associates. The commission is headed by veteran lawyer Surahata Janneh who will be assisted by Abiosseh George-Gaye and Bai Mass Saine. Former Solicitor General Amie Bensouda will serve as its lead counsel. A report on the Joll of News site notes that Barrow said the commission will not target Jammeh and his allies, but would rather identify 'wrongs committed by the previous regime'. He said his government is committed to the restoration of human rights, fair play and passion for justice for all. Legalbrief reports that Jammeh, who served as President from 1996 to 2017, refused to accept his election defeat and was forced to flee to Equatorial Guinea. The authorities subsequently seized $50m in assets tied to Jammeh and froze 131 properties and more than 80 bank accounts linked to him.
