Fifa suspends Sierra Leone Football Association

Fifa has suspended Sierra Leone from world football over claims of government interference. This after the governing body sent a letter to the country's Sports Ministry expressing ‘grave concern’ about the removal of its football association president, Isha Johansen, and general-secretary, Christopher Kamara. The ban couldn't have come at a worse time for the country which is days away from a crucial African Cup of Nations qualifier against Ghana on 11 October. Fifa says it will only lift the suspension if the association and its recognised leadership have confirmed that its ‘administration, premises, accounts and communication channels are under their control once again’. Isha Johanssen, president of Sierra Leone Football Association – and the only female president in Africa – declined to comment fully for legal reasons, but told CNN that ‘it's a sad day for Sierra Leone football and for the Sierra Leone people’.
