Ex-Rhodesian pensioners 'dumped'

Zimbabwean pensioners who served under the Rhodesian Government before relocating to SA are desperate after the Mugabe regime allegedly scrapped their pensions without explanation. NewsDay reports that the Flame Lily Foundation, which was set up to keep track of the affected pensioners, said its 300 members aged between 78 and 101 had been 'dumped' by the Zimbabwean Government. The pensioners were said to have relocated to SA at independence in 1980. 'In 2012, the Zimbabwe Government let us know that pensioners in South Africa could apply for their pension to be restored,' said foundation spokesperson John Redfern. 'With our assistance, over 500 pensioners were able to regain their lost pensions, backdated to 2009 when Zimbabwe adopted the US dollar as the country's official currency.' However, notes the report, he said that due to a change in policy, most of these pensioners have not received any payment since August 2016.
