Government bans foreign adoptions

Ethiopia announced last week that it has banned the adoption of children by foreigners amid concerns they face abuse and neglect abroad. BBC News reports that the country is one of the biggest sources for international adoptions by US citizens, accounting for about 20% of the total. Celebrities Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are among those who have adopted children from Ethiopia. In 2013, a US couple was convicted of killing an adopted Ethiopian girl which triggered a debate about the issue. Two years ago, Denmark barred the adoption of children from Ethiopia.
