Editors charged with defaming Museveni

Seven employees of Uganda's Red Pepper tabloid, including including senior editors, have been charged with defaming President Yoweri Museveni, his brother Salim Saleh and Security Minister Henry Tumukunde. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, the 20 November story said Museveni was plotting to overthrow his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame. Police spokesperson Emillian Kayima said the ‘false’ report was a threat to regional security. New Vision reports that prosecutors claim that the accused had subjected Museveni to ‘hatred, contempt and ridicule’. The suspects have been remanded in custody until 5 December The report notes that Museveni and Kagame used to be close allies before they had a high-profile fallout.
