DRC militia members linked to UN killing

Militia members from the central DRC were most likely behind the murder of two UN investigators in March, a UN inquiry has noted. However, African Independent reports that the UN has questioned the reliability of a video provided by the Congolese authorities pointing to the anti-government Kamuina Nsapu militia being responsible for the killings. Zaida Catalan, a Swede, and American Michael Sharp, who was coordinator of an independent sanctions monitoring group, were killed on 12 March as they carried out investigations for a UN Security Council report. Following the discovery of their bodies two weeks later in a shallow grave, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres set up an internal board of inquiry. 'Without further investigation and the necessary judicial processes, the identity, affiliations, and motives of the group that participated in killing Sharp and Catalan cannot be fully established,' the inquiry's executive summary noted.
