The Cairo Criminal Court has sentenced eight people to death for allegedly killing three officers during the storming of a city police station in 2013. A report on the Daily News Egypt site notes that the court also handed life sentences to 50 other defendants and jail terms of between five and 10 years to 10 more. The incident occurred when security forces violently dispersed two protest groups in an operation following the military's ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi that left more than 700 people dead. Prosecutors said the defendants fired on the Helwan police station, killing three people and wounding many others.
