Court eases bail conditions for Grace Mugabe’s sister

Publish date: 05 November 2018

Diary: IBA Legalbrief Africa
Category: Zimbabwe

Former Zimbabwean first lady Grace Mugabe's sister, who was arrested for allegedly reselling state-allocated land for a massive profit four years ago, has successfully applied to have her bail conditions relaxed. The Herald reports that Shuvayi Gombochuma in 2014 successfully applied for state land worth more than $400 000 to develop into stands for low-cost housing in Harare. However, she allegedly sold it to another land developer for more than $2m, securing a profit of $1.6m. She was released on $500 bail, but the Daily News reports that she applied for her bail conditions to be relaxed to allow her time to seek medical treatment outside the country. Harare Magistrate Rumbidzayi Mugwagwa granted the request, saying it would not prejudice the delivery of justice.
