Charges tweaked in Olympics rape case

Publish date: 13 February 2017
Issue Number: 714
Diary: IBA Legalbrief Africa
Category: General

The legal team representing Namibian boxer Jonas Junias Jonas is preparing a petition in answer to a 'new' charge that has been brought against him. It is unclear what the fresh charge relates to. The Namibian reports that the athlete was arrested on 7 August last year on charges that he sexually assaulted a domestic worker at the Rio Janeiro Olympics athletes village. After intervention by the Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC), Jonas was transferred to the Namibian embassy in Brazil, where he remains. The NNOC said ‘minor changes’ have been recorded relating to the victim's testimony. Legalbrief reports that Jonas was the flagbearer for Namibia during the parade of nations at the start of the mega sporting event.
