Sex offenders' registry established

Botswana’s Parliament has passed a motion to create a mandatory sex offenders' registry and ban sex offenders from working in institutions that deal with children. A report on the allAfrica site notes that the proposal was tabled by MP Bogolo Kenewendo. Botswana is the third African country to have the sex offenders list after South Africa and Kenya where potential employers are able to conduct checks. However, Botswana has opted to have the list available to the general public. ‘We need to protect our elderly and young children and even the able-bodied women against psychopaths who have made it a habit these days to rape and assault women,’ said Deputy Local Government Minister Botlogile Tshireletso. Police say the number of sexual offence cases increased from 543 in 2015 to 617 in 2016.
