Bobroff tells paper of 'plot' to discredit him

Leading Australian newspaper, The Sydney Morning Herald, is the latest to take up the saga of disbarred father-and-son lawyers Ronald and Darren Bobroff, fugitives from justice in SA who are living a comfortable lifestyle in a posh Sydney suburb, notes Legalbrief. The pair are alleged to have systematically overcharged their clients in SA, laundered money through a trust account and stolen money before fleeing to Australia. In their first Australian interview, they insist the fact that they have not been charged with any crime in SA proves they are victims of a wide-ranging conspiracy. Ronald said his tireless advocacy for the mostly 'poor, black and illiterate' road accident victims led a prominent South African insurance company to 'destroy' him and his son. Ronald detailed a fanciful account of the conspiracy against them and claimed former clients who sued were 'pawns' of the insurer's alleged plot, saying that no clients had complained to the Attorney Fidelity Fund, which exists to compensate people defrauded by solicitors. The pair say that, after they were disbarred, they were subject to escalating threats from the insurer's operatives, with late-night phone calls and bugs of their office becoming commonplace. An anonymous phone call warning that Darren's wife was about to be arrested prompted the family to flee to Sydney, where they remain almost three years later. 'My adviser said: "You dare not come back. They will hurt and probably murder you if you come back",' Ronald is quoted as saying.
