Amnesty International (AI) has condemned the assassination of the mayor of Mozambique's third city. Nampula mayor Mahamudo Amurane was killed on Wednesday evening, sparking angry demonstrations in the north-western city, where he was widely seen as an anti-corruption crusader. AI said Amurane had bravely tackled corruption. ‘It is no secret that this made him a target of attacks, even within his own Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) party,’ it said. A report on the News24 site notes that Amurane was elected mayor in 2013 representing Mozambique's third-largest party. However, last year he said he was leaving the party and would run in next year's elections as an independent.
